Mexico embarked on a two-game stint in South America which started with a 2-0 win over Internacional in Brazil before meeting Argentine giants River Plate. Aguirre made several changes, including handing a debut to San Luis goalkeeper Andrés Sánchez, who stepped in to replace Chivas' Raúl Rangel.

This will be the second time in history that El Tri faces River Plate. The two met in a friendly match nearly 75 years ago when River made a preseason tour in Mexico. On Feb. 19, 1950, Mexico defeated the Argentine club 2–0 at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City.
