BYD, on Tuesday at a launch event in Shenzhen, revealed the Super e-Platform, which the company claims can charge at rates of up to 1,000 kw —enough to add 400 kilometers of range, or nearly 250 miles, in five minutes of charging. This estimate is likely based on the CLTC test cycle used in China, a more lenient cycle than what the EPA uses.

The launch of the Super e-Platform sounds like it could mark a turning point in the electric car industry when charging an EV is as convenient as refueling your gas car. BYD needs to deliver on its promise to have an extensive network of one-megawatt chargers to actually allow users to reap the benefits.
