Kelly Sutherland got his name in the story of the Avalanche’s loss at the Toronto Maple Leafs — something no NHL referee ever wants.

At 6:02 into the game, both teams were penalized when Artturi Lehkonen and Matthew Knies exchanged fouls. The officials sent Lehkonen to the box for elbowing, while Knies was admonished for high-sticking. This resulted in two minutes of 4-on-4 play. A similar situation would also occur later in the game.

For the second time in two nights, the Rangers lost a game they had to win, against a team playing on the second night of a back-to-back. The Toronto Maple Leafs came into Madison Square Garden, got two goals from former Islander John Tavares and dealt the Rangers a crushing 4-3 loss, their third straight on the homestand, with one more game to go.
