Elon Musk spent a total of more than $290 million on the 2024 election, new federal filings show, boosting President Donald Trump and Republicans in a staggering effort that has helped to secure unprecedented access for the world’s richest person in the new administration.

Musk makes his first federal political contribution in 2003, the same year he becomes chairman of Tesla. According to Federal Election Commission records, he gave the Bush-Cheney reelection campaign $2,000 that year, and the same amount to Democratic nominee John Kerry’s presidential campaign the following year.

The official count of Musk’s donations further cemented him as the country’s largest -— and most prominent — donor.

Americans don’t know the full extent of what Musk is doing as he embeds alongside President Donald Trump at the top of the federal government.
