Swaths of the East Coast — from South Florida through the Carolinas and into New Jersey — are experiencing significant wildfires amid drier-than-normal conditions and before the spring green-up is fully underway.

Wildfires have burned thousands of acres in the Carolinas, prompting officials to issue evacuation orders. In North Carolina, three wildfires were burning in Polk County, located south of Asheville along the North Carolina border with South Carolina.

At least eight active wildfires are burning across both states on Monday, some of which have prompted evacuations.
