Jan. 17 (UPI) --Merle Louise, a Broadway star best known for her collaborations with Stephen Sondheim, has died. The actress died Jan. 11 in New York City, her family announced in an obituary.

Merle made her Broadway debut in the original cast of Gypsy. She began her run in the role of Thelma and later replaced in the role of Dainty June, a role she reprised on the first national tour.
