The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has upgraded the recall for broccoli sold at Walmart stores in 20 states to its most serious risk level more than one month after the recall was originally issued.

The 12-ounce bags of "Marketside Broccoli Florets" were sold at Walmart stores in 20 states, including Illinois.

The washed and ready-to-eat broccoli was past its best-if-used date and was no longer on store shelves at the time of the recall, but the FDA said that consumers may still have it in their freezers.

Some packages of Walmart-sold broccoli florets have been recalled by its manufacturer. The FDA has designated the recall as a Class I, the most serious category.

The agency warned that the products, made by Cal Yee Farm, could have potentially serious or even deadly consequences because the packages were mislabeled. No illnesses have been reported.

Braga Fresh, based in California, issued a product warning for Marketside Broccoli Florets, the FDA announced last year. It's now labeled deadly.

The 12-ounce bags have a "Best if Used By" date of Dec. 10, 2024, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Listeria monocytogenes. On Jan. 27, the FDA issued a notice which labelled the broccoli recall a Class 1 recall, the highest level recall where the product could pose a serious health risk and even death.
