The Realist movement in French art flourished from about 1840 until the late nineteenth century, and sought to convey a truthful and objective vision of contemporary life. Realism emerged in the aftermath of the Revolution of 1848 that overturned the monarchy of Louis-Philippe and developed during the period of the Second Empire under Napoleon III.

19th-century French art was made in France or by French citizens during the following political regimes: Napoleon's Consulate (1799–1804) and Empire (1804–14), the Restoration (1814–30), the July Monarchy (1830–48), the Second Republic (1848–52), the Second Empire (1852–71), and the first decades of the Third Republic (1871–1940).

19th-century French portraits served as a visual record of the social and cultural changes taking place during this transformative era. They showcased the changing roles of women, the rise of the bourgeoisie, the influence of realism, and the growing interest in psychology.

The story of the National Gallery’s rich holdings of 19th-century French paintings began in 1942 when a small but choice selection of impressionist works entered the collection among Joseph E. Widener’s bequest of more than 2,000 objects.

Rebelling against the French Academy’s refined, idealized landscapes, these artists infused the immediacy of the sketches they created outdoors into their finished studio paintings.

This volume, the first of three to catalog the collection of 19th-century French paintings at the National Gallery of Art, encompasses contemporaneous and sometimes conflicting movements of romanticism, classicism, and realism.
