Given threads I’ve seen on HV replacement shortly beyond power train warranty expires. I’d be hesitant with older cars (calendar aging is apparently a thing to consider as well). I’ll get downvoted to h*** for that because some do have much longer battery life - that’s true. I personally don’t want to gamble on almost 20k.

But if the battery had lasted just 1-2 more years before falling the owners would be on the hook. Battery longevity and replacement cost definitely is a concern if you plan on keeping the car past the warranty or even close to warranty expiration. If you just plan on owning for 2-4 years then it's not much of a concern.

Original comment: Unless you were notified by Tesla that the battery is about to fail catastrophically then I’d keep on using it. For me, my Model 3 would still be useful at even 50% degradation. Dec 9, 2013 · Tesla discontinued the battery replacement plan because there were so few takers. The current insurance cost to replace an 85kWh battery is around $45,000. That's what Tesla charges insurance companies after an accident. No one has said what the battery costs Tesla nor have I heard of an owner purchasing a battery, only insurance companies.

Tesla charges 15,000 to replace it with a refurbished battery Tesla will also sell a third-party vendor a new battery for 22K (about the value of the car).

Jan 23, 2023 · I think a responsible EV manufacturer should add additional 10%-20% battery capacity as buffer to offset the future battery degradation. Or EV battery range should be rated or advertised with some expected future degradation.
