A room in the wall: Ahilya Fort, Maheshwar
The 18th-century Ahilya Fort is situated by the banks of the river Narmada in the central Indian town of Maheshwar. Its tapered masonry walls stabilise the building and retain the hillock behind it, transferring the verticality of the terrain to the artificial structure.

Individual huts had been redeveloped over time, rising to four or five storeys in the 1950s, then up to nine storeys in the early 1960s and reaching a maximum of 17 storeys in the 1970s.
